The weather

We are flying into Barneo at 89% on April 9th and will be the second group on the ice this year. The sun first appears over the horizon around the March 21st and stays around until mid September. So we will be in the very early stages of Spring. Temperatures should be an average minus 20 to 25 ° C, though if we are unlucky fluctuation down to minus 50 is possible.  The North Pole is warmer than the South Pole.  The coldest temperature ever recorded is just a mind-numbing –68° C!

Storms are usually short lived, just a couple of days, but given that we are walking on a floating, undulating expanse of ice, they can have serious consequences. With luck we should avoid the worst of the Arctic fog that descends later in the season.
